There has been a great deal of chatter around an episode, a season, a special, or even a whole SERIES dedicated to Arthur growing up among fans who grew up watching the beloved PBS show.
As such, I thought it would be neat ("neat", who the heck uses that word anymore??) to start a blog/screenplay about Arthur as a senior in high school, almost 10 years later.
First of all, I want to make a few things VERY clear:
The characters in this blog belong to Marc Brown and the producers of Arthur, and PBS kids. This blog is created as an homage to the original characters, as such I will try to stay true to the integrity of the Arthur characters and not debase the original content in any way.
Also, I will not be making any money from this (I bet my family WISHES I would make money from it, but alas, no...), that includes "donations". I do not wish to profit from the blog in any way other than feeling extremely satisfied (though I can easily give that up too).
(If anything, I might be able to re-excite some young adults who watched the show as kids, so they may more likely buy into the actual bona-fide Arthur market if they have children... or for their own collection, can't judge...)
The blog is meant to be fair use, creative commons, or whatever you call it when you add to someone's work without claiming it to be your own. Again, credit will go to Marc Brown and the Arthur team on PBS for the characters and their personas. So please don't sue me, I'm a student, and don't have any money.
So now that I got the legal stuff out of the way, what to expect:
A script detailing the adventures (and misadventures) of the Arthur gang. I will probably leave out Ladonna and family, as well as some chracters that appeared in seasons 7-16, especially if they were only featured in a single episode.
If you have a story suggestion, you can post it on the (*unofficial*) Molly Macdonald fanpage (which I moderate) or you can send it to stella_spotty@yahoo.com. I will read them, but I may not respond to all of them, and I'll probably only use the ones I like. (Also let me know if there are any MAJOR continuity problems, though maybe we can allow a few small ones here and there... Arthur is infamous for continuity errors :))
And there WILL be some romance. Just because I know some of you reading this (if anyone even bothers to read it) will be on the edge of your seat dying to know. The answer is yes, but I'm not telling who.*
If any of this bothers you, then feel free to write your own blog.
*Note that I want to stay true to the series, and maintain its integrity, so while I may touch on slightly more mature subjects (e.g. death, LGBTQ issues, politics, etc) there will be no sex or anything of an overtly sexual nature. I need to bring this up because I can already forsee requests for all kinds of shenanigans on this nature (some of them trolls, of course). I won't do this because I feel this would be a rotten smear on this sweet G-rated show (and I would feel really uncomfortable, dirty and just plain wrong, myself!). I don't want to sully the "pure" nature of Arthur. Therefore, I want to make it quite clear, this is not some kinky fan fiction (and some of them are still minors for pity's sake, good grief!), note I didn't title it "50 shades of Arthur" (actually that sounds quite good as a title...) THIS IS NOT UP FOR DEBATE. Have some decency people!
Also I'm refraining from using any words banned by the FCC for television broadcasts. Sorry, you don't get to experience D.W. saying *bleep* for reals. :p
Same goes for violence and explicit drug use. (So no "Breaking Brain", sorry guys. Even though recasting Breaking Bad with Arthur characters could be funny, not for this blog)
Now, I might *hint* a little (the way they do in Disney movies sometimes, and it always goes right over the kids' heads while you're all: O_O "...what?"), but in general I want to keep it PG and stay true to the show. One reason we like Arthur so much is because it's innocent, and I feel it would be wrong to ruin that.
Whew! That's quite a lot, isn't it?
I'll have the first post up soon. It'll be the FIRST part of episode 1. Hey, I don't have a writing team, it's just me, and this is not even my JOB, so cut a lady some slack here!

Looks like Ratburn went through a rather *interesting* phase during his teens |

Kate sure looks different. Mostly bigger. And more hair. |

hey! hoping you will be keeping this up, ive always loved stuff like this, but, believe me, DONT try reading the fanfics (on the website.)they are FULL of LGBTQ, (frankly, PLEASE dont write that, i would feel dirty reading that, and i dont know anyone who considers that non-dirty. :/ anyhow, i also have a question, although this would be for the arthur facebook people, but, anyways, how can i submit an episode idea for the show? and i dont have a facebook OR email. i could do this:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.pbs.org/parents/arthur/help/answers/contact_mailbox.html?cat=contact
but i dont know if they would even respond. does it work? please help me, im a "sad, sad bunny." ;)
As I said, I think those are indecent, especially since the Arthur characters are children in the show, and even aging them to where they are "legal" just feels wrong.
DeleteI think you may have misunderstood... by LGBTQ issues, I mean acceptance of persons who identify as LGBTQ (due to so much hate and ignorance towards these people, the Arthur writers are severely limited to what they can write and not offend people, even if it's "G-rated"). As I already stated, it will be awareness based, not of a sexual nature. I know for some people who don't know any gay people (or they just don't know it, haha)this is hard to wrap their head around, so again, "romance" (innocent flirtation, holding hands, kiss on cheek etc.) NO SEX.
As for the second part of your question, I can let them know, just send it to me.
DeleteYou don't have email? That's... surprising, since nowadays it seems (at least in industrialized countries) you would have to be Amish not to (were you inspired by that "Amish" episode with Buster by any chance? ;))
Sign up for Yahoo mail, it's really easy--I did it in middle school-- because there's no reason not to have it if you can access a computer (and aren't Amish :)).
haha, yeah, i can see why you would say that. i might get one soon, its just that i am behind on school, and mom says she wants me to finish first. ;) i definitely can access a computer, but, hey, not everyone has to have email, facebook and stuff to live in this age.
ReplyDeleteas to the LGBTQ thing, well, im all for people finding out who they are, but i still find LGBTQ of any kind sorta disturbing. yeah, even "innocent" romance. im glad their wont be any S3X, but LGBTQ is, to me at least, something that i dont think is a part of life or nature, i think in this modern world right now, the media and a whole lot of people are pressuring the message "if it feels good, do it." and i dont think half the people who are g6y would be if they had never heard of the idea. (i know from personal experience.) now, if you want to put that in, you can, its your blog, just dont judge me if i dont read those. g6y stuff IS unnatural, but i dont think of it as a sexual preference, but as an addiction, and i think that bringing it into stuff like this, sorta takes away the sweet, homey natural feel of the whole show. yeah, im very opinionated.
its your blog, and if thats what you want to post, fine by me. (ive had enough internet fights, personally. :) ) im just saying that not everybody thinks its natural, or decent, but that doesn't mean they are prejudiced, ignorant politicians. as a person who as dealt with G6y people firsthand, i can say without any shame that i believe that G6ay is not something that needs to be accepted, but the people who are G6AY need to be loved, but not by their same gender. i dont hate G6ys (except for the obnoxious, gay pride parade people, ;) ) but i feel sorry for them.
wow, that was longer than i thought. (sorry, but i needed to get that off my chest.)
Alright, fair enough. I think it's no different than being straight. The fact is, they'd still be gay, just they wouldn't be "out", they'd be suffering in silence like they "should" because they believed they were "wrong" in some way, and that I DO feel very sorry for, it must be painful to have to go your whole life without having a really fulfilling romantic relationship-- or being able to be accepted by one's own family and community because of it.
DeleteThe way I see it, the whole idea of the show "Arthur" is to accept differences and get along despite the fact that some people are different, like George with his dyslexia,, Buster with his asthma, Marina with her disability, and Arthur with his "four eyes" (LOL). To me, sexuality is no different, and the fact that it has a later onset (puberty) does not mean they "turned" that way, they were born with that predisposition. I hope you understand why I find sexuality to be irrelevant to one's moral character-- some of the sweetest people identify as gay, and that only affects who they choose to date, nothing else.
But anyway, we can argue about civil rights all day, but... ehh, that's why we vote, right?
And people, sorry to get on a soapbox, I hope I didn't scare anyone away with the above political, liberal-minded ramblings!
ReplyDeleteFeel free to ignore it, sing a few rounds of Crazy Bus or something to clear your mind.
Hey, I'm thinking of bringing back Kresblain, I already have a joke lined up. And "Uncle Fred" from Arthur's Perfect Xmas in some form, he was such a good character.
